[ARCHIVED] Governor Wes Moore Visits Lonaconing

News Flash - Governor Visits Lonaconing

Governor Wes Moore yesterday joined members of the legislature and local officials to visit Garrett and Allegany counties, touring civil service and small business locations that are vital to the counties’ rural communities. Among other stops, Governor Moore’s visit to the Town of Lonaconing marked the first time since 1996 that a sitting governor visited the town.

“When I said we were going to represent the State of Maryland from the sandy beaches of the Eastern Shore to the rolling hills of Western Maryland, I meant it,” said Governor Moore. “Our administration is going to raise the voices of all Marylanders, with the goal of creating a more competitive and equitable home for all.”

Town of Lonaconing: Governor Moore then toured the Town of Lonaconing, where residents recently experienced a water boil advisory after the town’s water treatment system produced drinking water that did not meet health-based standards. With Mayor Jack Coburn as his guide, the governor’s first stop was at the Good Will Fire Company No. 1 to tour the town’s water distribution site and to thank the firefighters who donated their time dispensing water to the community.

Governor Moore also recognized the Maryland Department of the Environment, the Maryland Department of Health, the Maryland Department of Emergency Management, and the Maryland Environmental Service for working in partnership with the Town of Lonaconing and the City of Frostburg to restore a safe and sustainable supply of drinking water to the town. With the City of Frostburg now supplying an alternative water source, the town lifted the boil water advisory yesterday.

Following the firehouse visit, Governor Moore visited George Ternent & Sons, Inc., a family-owned small business serving the town of Lonaconing since 1885, and George's Creek Florist & Gift Shoppe, where he selected a bouquet of flowers for the First Lady.
