James Elliott


James F. Elliott was sworn in as State’s Attorney for Allegany County on February 24, 2021.  He was appointed state’s attorney by Judge Jeffrey S. Getty and will serve as the interim state’s attorney until the election in 2022, and was then elected into the position for another term.

As State’s Attorney, Elliott represents the interests of Allegany County in court proceedings and enforces state laws in criminal court.  There are times when officials will ask him for legal advice and legal opinions on a variety of matters related to criminal investigations and prosecutions.

Elliott spent 6 years as Assistant Public Defender for Allegany and Garrett counties before becoming the district public defender from 2017-2021.  His district public defender office housed 11 attorneys and 9 support personnel.

James Elliott is a graduate of Bishop Walsh School, Frostburg State University and the University of Baltimore School of Law.  He, his wife and 4 children returned to his native Allegany County in 2011 when Elliott left private law practice in Howard County.
